FAQS

Patreon

What is Patreon?

Patreon is a platform that connects “creators” (podcasters, indie journalists, musicians, artists, and — in our case — a center for spiritual practice) with community. If it sounds familiar, you’ve probably heard it referenced by your favorite public thinker or podcast host. It was conceived of by musician Jack Conte who, in the early 2000s, was making music he loved for a fanbase of hundreds of thousands and still wasn’t able to make a living. So often there are lots of middlemen standing between creators and community — app stores, ad brokers, and algorithms; the marketing machines and the marketplace machinations. All of them taking a cut. With Patreon, Jack aimed to eliminate those middlemen, letting creators share work directly with community. And allowing community to engage creators directly, too. Founded in 2013, Patreon is now used by 8 million community members (or “patrons”) and 250,000+ creators, including us 🙂. (I enjoyed this read from a few years back about the Patreon origin story, if you want to learn more.)

Patreon can be accessed via mobile app, which can by downloaded to your phone via the Apple or Google Play Store. It can also be accessed via web browser.

We’ll be holding office hours for personalized tech support starting in March. Keep an eye out for an email from our newsletter in the coming weeks with more information.

We do plan to reinstate subscription plans after May 31, though rates may vary from those offered for the Kinward app via the Apple / Google Play stores. We are a 501.c.3 with a stated commitment that cost will never be a barrier to accessing our teachings. This means we walk the line between (1) valuing our work such that we have the financial resources to keep doing it; and (2) keeping our work affordable so that it actually gets into the hands of folks who want and need it. It’s a balance and know that we will always seek to find it!

Our Former Mobile App

Why did you sunset the app and move to Patreon?

Operating a mobile app is a time and resource intensive project. And ultimately, we’re not a tech company. We’re a small brick and mortar 501.c.3 nonprofit based in Greensboro, North Carolina. We’re not in the business of apps. We’re on the path of spiritual practice. Sunsetting the app and migrating to Patreon means we’ll spend less time managing the technology of things, and more time doing what we’re called to do: Create spiritual practices that help folks uncover the sacred and practice radical care.

STEP 1: Confirm Your Subscription Status
  1. Open App Store (iOS)
  2. Tap your profile icon (upper right)
  3. Tap Subscriptions to see active/expiring apps
    • If Second Breath is not listed, you’re all set
    • If it says “Expiring on [DATE]”, no action needed
    • If it says “Renews on [DATE]”, tap and then tap Cancel Subscription
  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right)
  3. Tap Payments & Subscriptions
  4. Tap Subscriptions to see active/expiring apps
    • If Second Breath isn’t listed, you’re all set
    • If it says “will end on [DATE]”, no action needed
    • If it says “will renew on [DATE]”, tap it, then Cancel Subscription
  • If your renewal or expiration date is on or after March 31, you qualify for a refund
  • Before you start the process of requesting a refund, make sure you have the app downloaded to your device. If you previously deleted the app, re-download it
  • To request a refund for an iOS annual subscription:
    1. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com
    2. Choose Request a refund → Select reason → Next
    3. Pick the Second Breath subscription → Submit

NOTE: Because of Apple’s privacy policies, we do not have visibility or technical capability to process individual refunds. This has to be handled on the consumer side via the above process.

  • If your renewal or expiration date is on or after March 31, you qualify for a refund.
  • To request a refund:
      1. Locate your order ID # (it will start “GPA” followed by a series of numbers)
      2. Email [email protected] with the subject line “Refund Request – yearly Android app subscription” and include:
        • your name
        • email associated with your Google Play Store account
        • order ID #
        • billing zip code
  • A member of the Second Breath team will process your refund request within 2 business days. NOTE: The office is open Monday – Thursday.

Complete the above steps first. Then, you’re ready to delete the old Second Breath app from your phone. We’re so grateful for your journey with us – and look forward to continuing our contemplative practices together on Patreon. Blessings on your way!
